Black Rhino Academy — International School

Black Rhino Academy provides an education that meets the highest international standards while embracing the richness of Tanzanian culture and heritage. Its holistic approach supports the development of the whole child — academically, socially, emotionally and physically. The school believes education involves more than traditional disciplines: it involves critical thinking and preparing children for an ever-changing world. Its stated mission is to give children all the tools they need to succeed in and outside the classroom, on the belief that the future of Tanzania lies in educating and empowering the younger generation to be creative, innovative and visionary leaders.

Cambridge International provides the spine of the curriculum, supplemented with a variety of other experiences inside and outside the classroom. As Head of School Simon Murray puts it, the school is "progressive and forward-thinking in the provision of an educational experience that allows our students to excel academically while being encouraged to develop as a whole person" — and while currently a small but growing international primary and secondary school, "while small, we are certainly not small-minded."

Founder Nickson Mariki describes the ethos this way: "None of us are born excellent. It is earned through disciplined effort and character building. It requires grit, passion, life-long learning and commitment." The school casts its net wide for talented children and builds the methods to help each one express their excellence — whether that is found in the classroom, on the pitch or beyond. Even with a high standard of academic education, the school sees itself as a School of Life.

Black Rhino Boarding offers a day and residential community where students thrive in learning, leadership and a vibrant environment that feels like home, supported by the school's facilities. The campus includes a full athletics track with a football pitch, basketball and tennis courts, brick-built classroom blocks with wide glazed frontages, common rooms and lounges, and boarding dormitories.

Beyond the classroom, students take part in community and environmental work — including a Plastic Patrol collaboration with the Greenmanjaro Foundation and Roots & Shoots Tanzania to keep Karatu clean, the Run for Safe Delivery marathon hosted by FAME Africa, and cultural field trips such as a Year 6 visit to the Hadzabe community to learn fire-making, traditional archery and toolmaking.
